MAY 2019 WRAP UP

Hello everyone! May has just ended as I am writing this and the heat definitely signals an approaching summer. I had mock exams this week, so not much reading happened, but here is a breakdown of what I’ve been reading and listening to this month!

Mangas made up half of everything I read this month (largely because I had exams and anything more taxing was just not going to happen). For some I keep starting new series instead of continuing other ones, but oh well.

Firstly, I read Only the flower knows by Rihito Takarai. It’s a fairly typical romance between a closed off guy and a super enthusiastic, upbeat guy who are thrown together by their mentor. This was my first time reading a manga in German, so that was fun, but I’m not sure if I will continue reading the series- good, but nothing special.

Then, I read volumes 1 and 2 of The Royal Tutor by Higasa Akai about a professor who is hired to teach the teenaged heirs to the throne of Granzreich. Along with Black Butler, I think this is my favourite manga so far. The brothers all have distinct personalities, and I love their interactions. Heine Wittgenstein (the professor) is also charming, adorable, and a really good teacher. I have high hopes for the rest of the series.

I did read something other than manga! Namely, I read a play (Stories by Nina Raine- a story about a woman who is nearing 40 and really wants a child), a poetry collection (Nocturnal by Wilder Poetry about self-acceptance and love after heartbreak), and a little book of self-affirmations (Rilakkuma- By Your Side by Aki Kondō). Stories was particularly insightful and made the every day both interesting and terrifyingly real.

You can check out my review for Nocturnal here and my review for Rilakkuma here.

Moving on from books to music, here are my favourite singles and albums of the month!

There weren’t many singles that caught my attention this week, but Swedish singer Menke released the ever-gorgeous Echo. She’s not very well-known, but her voice is gorgeous.

Not the month for singles, but definitely a good month for K-Pop albums and mini albums! Rothy released her second mini album Color of Rothy with the fun, laid-back title track Bee, and OH MY GIRL released an album of fairytale proportions with THE FIFTH SEASON.

GOT7 has maintained their track record of solid albums with SPINNING TOP: BETWEEN SECURITY & INSECURITY and the ever under-appreciated, yet wondrously talented A.C.E released their first 5-member comeback since late 2017 with the much anticipated UNDER COVER. You can check out my review for A.C.E’s album here and I highly recommend taking a listen to all of the songs which you can find in this playlist.

Also, a quick honourable mention to Amber-Simone’s Strawberry Kisses (2018) which I am only just discovering!

Happy reading and listening, Keira x.

P.S. I haven’t been super active on other blogs this month because of mock exams, but a quick shout out to one of my favourite posts of the month: Xandra @StarrySkyBooks’ semi-hilarious , semi-helpful advice on how to find the perfect book!
