March TBR: TBR Round 1, #FemmeFanTale

Hello everyone and welcome to my very belated March TBR! (To be honest, I’ve made some progress through this already, but no matter.)

If you haven’t seen my previous post, I recently created a TBR game, and this is the first month that I’m going to be trying it out! I will also be participating in the #FemmeFanTale readathon as well!

THE GAME

My baseline for this round was 8 cards, but I ended up picking out another 3 as well in order to fit in the International Reading Book Club pick, the books for the #FemmeFanTale readathon, and then still having books to read for the last two weeks of the month. This is a really ambitious TBR, as I have a lot of revision to do this month and this is the biggest TBR I’ve had in a while, but I think it will probably be achievable.

CARDS DRAWN
  • Genre wheel: History (Non-Fiction)
  • Free choice
  • Roll dice: 1- BookTube recommendation
  • Goodreads poll
  • E-Book
  • Friend Pick
  • Audiobook
  • 5 Star Prediction
  • Music Pick: Mamamoo- Words Don’t Come Easy
  • Roll Dice: 2- Goodreads recommendation
  • A to Z: R

THE TBR

SHOOTING AN ELEPHANT AND OTHER ESSAYS BY GEORGE ORWELL

Reason: Continuing!

Goal: I’m about a third of the way through, and I’d like to get to more than halfway by the end of March.

Description: A collection of some of Orwell’s essays, largely political in nature, but also very self-reflective.

ARIEL BY SYLVIA PLATH

Reason: Continuing!

Goal: At the beginning of the month I was about 1/4 of the way through, and I would like to finish it by the end of the month!

Description: Some of Plath’s most well-known poems. Lots of poems about relationships, death, and mental health. Superimposed images are a hallmark of this collection.

DIE VERWANDLUNG VON FRANZ KAFKA (METAMORPHOSIS)
18710714. sx318

Reason: This is the International Reading Club book club pick for March and April! It will also fulfill the “audiobook” prompt.

Goal: I will (read: already did) finish this book before the beginning of the #FemmeFanTale readathon!

Description: Weird, but a classic.

HOUSE OF EARTH AND BLOOD BY SARAH J. MAAS
44778083

Reason: This is one of my most anticipated, if not my most anticipated releases of the year. This is fulfilling the “5 star prediction” prompt, and will also fulfill the “nonhuman protagonist” and “woman with a weapon” prompts for the #FemmeFanTale Readathon.

Goal: I’ve started this book, and I will be finishing it at the beginning of the readathon.

Description: Adult fantasy, but set in a world with technology. Bryce’s friend is killed and she’s roped into the investigation under the watchful eye of fallen angel/bodyguard/assassin Hunt.

the magic toyshop by angela carter
39926656. sy475

Reason: My lovely friend Annabelle picked this one for me to read! We both read Carter’s The Bloody Chamber for our English Lit class back in 2018, and loved it, so I’m looking forward to giving this one a go too. This will also fulfill the “retelling” prompt for the #FemmeFanTale Readathon.

Goal: My plan is to listen to the audiobook of this throughout the readathon!

Description: A classic gothic horror-meets fairytale-meets coming of age story from the queen of feminist fairytales.

THE ROYAL TUTOR VOL. 6 BY HIGASA AKAI
36040150

Reason: This will fulfill the “A to Z” prompt of my TBR game, and I’m also bending the rules slightly for the #FemmeFanTale Readathon and using it to fulfill the “historical setting” prompt, as well as the “book in a series” prompt.

Goal: I plan on reading this (and the next book) on the Tuesday of the #FemmeFanTale readathon/as soon as I finish A House of Earth and Blood, because it won’t take me very long and I think it will help me avoid the inevitable book hangover that Sarah J. Maas books tend to result in.

Description: The sixth book in Akai’s manga series about Herr Wittgenstein and the princes he teaches, set in a Germanic kingdom.

SHADOWS OF MAGIC BY LINDA CHAPMAN
860467. sy475

Reason: I started rereading this series in 2016 and never finished… so why not? Also, it fulfills the “middle grade” prompt for the #FemmeFanTale readathon without me having to buy new books. Also fulfills the “ebook” card.

Goal: Read this on the same day/around the same time as The Royal Tutor. Probably won’t take more than hour or so.

Description: The fifth book in a children’s series about Lucy and her friends who have stardust powers.

THE MIDNIGHT LIE BY MARIE RUTKOSKI
34460349

Reason: This is the “goodreads poll” pick! It’s one of the many ARCs I own and need to read, and it came out on the 3rd so I really should get around to it. It’s also going to count as the “YA” and “Queer” books for the readathon!

Goal: Um, just finally read it? I’m a little worried I might end up not liking it that much even though I liked the previous series in the world, so it may end up being a DNF, but I’m hoping it won’t!

Description: Set in the world of The Winner’s Curse, follow Nirim and the rakish Sid in this YA romantic fantasy.

UNTOLD NIGHT AND DAY BY BAE SUAH
45893865

Reason: This is the last book for my #FemmeFanTale readathon TBR! It’s fulfilling the “adult”, “new-to-you author” and “BAME author” prompts for that, and also the “goodreads recommendation” prompt from my TBR game!

Goal: This is going to be the last book I read for the readathon, as a sort of transition from the huge fantasy week to the no-fantasy end of the month, as this is loosely speculative fiction.

Description: From one of Korea’s most prolific and experimental female writers, a story where reality is fraying at its seams, as Ayami roams the streets after being made redundant.

WE ARE CUBA! BY HELEN YAFFE
41962940

Reason: I actually want/need to read this as a supplement to my studying for my History course. I was planning on reading it over my Easter break, but seeing as my “genre wheel” spun a non-fiction history genre, I decided I may as well start it now!

Goal: I would kind of like to finish this in March, but equally it is important that I can use the information in my exams, so if I need to take a little longer and it spills over into April, that would be totally fine as well!

Description: An economic and social history of Cuba after the fall of the Soviet Union.

THE FLATSHARE BY BETH O’LEARY
50212494

Reason: I had been seeing this book around BookTube (hence it counting for the “Booktube recommendation” roll-the-dice card), and when I was out shopping with a friend we both decided to pick it up.

Goal: This is (most likely) going to be my audiobook read for the last two weeks of the month.

Description: Tiffy and Leon share a flat: Tiffy has it at night, and Leon has it during the day. Romance blossoms.

FAR AWAY BIRD BY DOUGLAS A. BURTON
48381373

Reason: This was my ‘free choice’ pick, but basically I’m just really overdue on reading this ARC (it was released in early February). Everything I’ve read about it has sung its praises, but equally I’m intimidated?

Goal: Just read it. This will be my focus for the last two weeks of the month.

Description: A historical fiction novel about Theodora’s scandalous past before she became the Empress of the Byzantine Empire.

BEFORE THE COFFEE GETS COLD BY TOSHIKAZU KAWAGUCHI
44421460. sy475

Reason: This will fulfill the “music pick” card! The song that I got was Mamamoo’s Words Don’t Come Easy, and whilst this book doesn’t match the meaning of that song (I think), I think it does kind of link with the title of the song? I think there are going to be some pretty tricky conversations in this book.

Goal: This is probably my lowest priority for the month, but I would definitely like to get to it! It’s quite short, so it should be possible!

Description: In this coffeeshop, you can travel back in time, but you must return before the coffee gets cold, and you can’t leave the cafe.

And that’s all! Not overly ambitious at all (hahahahahahahaha)…

What are you reading plans for March? Let me know if you have read any of these books, and what you thought!

Happy reading,

Keira x.
