Hi! I'm Keira and I'm the author here at Headphones and Hyperboles. It's nice to meet you :) I like to read and listen to music (obviously), but I also really like sleeping, eating chocolate and going for picnics with friends.
Last year I read very few 2018 releases (read: one) and whilst I don’t generally fixate on new releases a lot anyway, I do like to read some. So, I thought I would share with you guys 4 books which I am waiting to read when they come out this year!
12.03: The Bird King by G Willow Wilson
This looks like it will be a fascinating fantasy story, mixing elements which I love (like Jinn) with things I have never read about before (such as Muslim Spain).
“…a stunning new novel that tells the story of Fatima, a concubine in the royal court of Granada, the last emirate of Muslim Spain, and her dearest friend Hassan, the palace mapmaker…” (Goodreads)
02.04: Descendant of the Crane by Joan He
The author described this as a Chinese drama minus the girl-on-girl hate and competing harems, which sounds pretty good to me. I love reading fantasy which incorporate a distinct culture (such as historical China in this case), so I’m keeping my eye out for this one.
“Tyrants cut out hearts. Rulers sacrifice their own.
Princess Hesina of Yan has always been eager to shirk the responsibilities of the crown, but when her beloved father is murdered, she’s thrust into power, suddenly the queen of an unstable kingdom. Determined to find her father’s killer, Hesina does something desperate: she engages the aid of a soothsayer—a treasonous act, punishable by death… because in Yan, magic was outlawed centuries ago…” (Goodreads)
03.09: Crescent City by Sarah J. Maas
Okay, so this doesn’t have a cover yet and the ^^release date is not definite yet, but I honestly can’t wait for this!!!!!!!!!!
“Set in a world where humans struggle to survive amid intricate hierarchies of demons, shifters, angels, and countless other magical creatures, Crescent City tells the story of half-human, half-Sidhe Bryce Quinlan. After the brutal slaying of her best friend, Bryce joins forces with a powerful warrior-angel to hunt down the killer, leading them toward a treacherous enemy that could destroy the fabric of their world.
The series will feature an array of captivating new characters, including a spitfire heroine who will stop at nothing to avenge her friend and protect her vibrant city, an epic world on the brink of war, and Maas’ signature heart-pounding romance.” (Goodreads)
05.11: The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
I’ve been needing this book since I finished reading The Night Circus to be honest. I can’t wait to see what Erin’s new book will be like!!!
“Zachary Ezra Rawlins is a graduate student in Vermont when he discovers a strange book hidden in the library stacks. As he turns the pages, entranced by tales of lovelorn prisoners, key collectors, and nameless acolytes, he reads something strange: a story from his own childhood.
Bewildered by this inexplicable book and desperate to make sense of how his own life came to be recorded, Zachary uncovers a series of clues — a bee, a key, and a sword — that lead him to a masquerade party in New York, to a secret club, and through a doorway to a subterranean library, hidden far below the surface of the earth…” (Goodreads)
So that’s it for today! What 2019 releases are you looking forward to?! Be sure to let me know what I’m missing out on. Happy reading, Keira x.
Hello everyone and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!! I honestly can’t believe it’s 2019… I turn 18 this year?! Anywayy I decided to combine all of my beginning-of-the-year type posts into one post because it just worked better like that so let’s begin
Go to the gym at least once a week. I have a gym membership and usually I try to go at least three times a month in order to not waste money, but I want to make it into a habit and always go to the gym on Tuesdays.
Sleep and wake up at the same time each day. Obviously this is dependent on a number of factors, but I want to aim to go to bed between 11-12 each night and wake up at 6am.
Study and do homework better. I have had issues in 2018 where I get behind in notes etc. and procrastinate, and it makes me quite stressed and leaves me behind. So in order to tackle this there are a couple of things I’m going to do: take notes in smaller chunks e.g. by subtopic rather than unit so that it’s easier to finish each section, and do just 45 minutes of homework as soon as I get home in order to hopefully get me in the zone a bit.
Read at least three books a month. I had a very slow reading year in 2018, hence why there has been a lack of book-related posts on this blog thus far, and whilst I don’t intend to force myself to read upwards of 100 books as I managed in 2016 and 2017, I do want to read a bit more than I did in 2018, and more consistently rather than in sudden spikes.
Get my TBR below 40 books. It’s currently at 72 books, largely because of how little I read this year and how much rereading I did. The number is SO high and it annoys me a little, especially as I know how much I’m missing out by not reading some of them. So I want to decrease my TBR to a somewhat more manageable size.
Catch up on new releases and sequels in series. I didn’t really keep an eye on new releases in 2018 and sequels often got left behind as well, so I want to keep up with both this year so I don’t miss lots of amazing books.
Listen to more western music. Now it isn’t that I don’t listen to much western music, but more that I don’t listen to much variety… I often end up sticking to a few artists, especially because I don’t particularly like western hiphop, nor am I a big fan of EDM. Therefore, I want to make an effort this year to find and discover artists that are less known with amazing music.
Make better playlists. Now, in 2018 I had a good playlist for summer, but the rest of the time I had to sort of go and pick songs to listen to or just listen to songs on shuffle, which wasn’t as enjoyable, so I want to invest a bit of time in putting together more playlists.
Also, I’m thinking of doing a “what I want to see in K-Pop for 2019” post if that interests anyone?!
Post at least twice a week and interact more with the blogs I follow (+ find some new blogs to follow!)
Do more mini reviews for music. (reviewing songs, not albums) This is because sometimes I don’t really have time or desire to listen to and review a whole album, but I want to review a couple of different title tracks, or if a song is just a single. This way I can review more music, with less pressure for me!
Review more books that I read for pleasure, as opposed to books I received in exchange for a review. I want to share the books I loved with the world, not just the ones I am obliged to review!
If you feel like helping me out, suggest some blogs for me to check out!
AND THAT’S IT! WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS THIS YEAR? Do let me know! Happy New Year, Keira x.
Hey guys! I promise I haven’t given up on the whole posting-every-day-in-December thing, but this post took ages to put together… sorry! I wasn’t sure how long to make this list, so I asked you guys on Twitter and most of you said top 50 so that’s what I went with. Enjoy ❤
#50: SEVENTEEN- Oh My!
I didn’t love this song when I first heard it, but the jigsaw puzzle choreography and the light-hearted goodness won me over.
#49: A.C.E- Take Me Higher
A.C.E are one of my favourite groups, and they’re super talented (please support them). This was a great summer track, but it didn’t place higher on my list as it’s one I wouldn’t listen to outside of summer time 🙂 That being said, I particularly love WOW’s rap verse and the breakdown.
#48: Golden Child- Genie
The thing that first attracted me to this song was the music video aesthetic, because it’s so colourful and fun. Overall, it’s just a pretty fun song!
#47: TWICE- YES or YES
TWICE have been growing on me recently and this is definitely one of my favourite songs by them. It’s catchy, fun, and I find myself constantly doing the dance whenever I say yes… it’s become an issue.
#46: IZ*ONE- La Vie en Rose
I didn’t watch Produce48 and I think some of these girls are too young to debut, and I’m not a massive fan of the groups which come out of these produce shows in general, but that being said, this was a great debut with a gorgeous music video: so elegant, so classy.
#45: N.Flying- Hot Potato
This song is absolutely ridiculous, but that’s definitely its charm!
#44: GOT7- Look
GOT7’s music has matured so much ever since their 7 for 7 album and I am loving it. This MV was so aesthetically pleasing (especially BamBam’s scene) and I love the rap verses.
#43: DAY6- Shoot Me
Nobody does angst quite like DAY6 and I absolutely love the slightly creepy build of the opening lines. The chorus is also incredibly catchy.
#42: JENNIE- SOLO
I was really disappointed by BLACKPINK’s comeback this year. I’m not a massive fan of theirs, but I was looking forward to their comeback… I cannot stand DDU-DDU and I didn’t really like the rest of the album either. Needless to say, I was very happy when this song came out and I liked it.
#41: Leebada- Painting
Leebada is a very new and unknown artist, but I absolutely love her voice.
#40: fromis_9- LOVE BOMB
Now, permanent groups made on shows are something I can get behind! Especially when they have a more organic growth in popularity as fromis_9 have. They released a couple songs this year, but this one really took the cake and I had it on repeat for a couple of weeks after it was released!
#39: ONEW- Blue
Have you heard that voice? Feel the emotions!
#38: APRIL- Oh! my mistake
This group has been around for a decent while, but this is the song that got me hooked. I love the retro inspiration and yes, this was also on repeat. It’s so bouncy and fun!
#37: VROMANCE- Star
Now I’m not sure if it’s the song or the music video which I like more, because it was definitely the MV which hooked me, but this is just so soothing and beautiful that I had to put it on this list.
#36: BTOB- Beautiful Pain
So I think I have a thing for songs in which painful emotions are expressed through gorgeous, gorgeous voices.
#35: OH MY GIRL- Secret Garden
This song came out at the beginning of the year… I immediately added it to my songs and went through all of their music videos. Needless to say, I fell in love and they’re now one of my favourite girl groups.
#34: SHINee- Good Evening
SHINee have had an incredible year for music this year, especially considering the tragedy they have been coping with. This song is just so beautiful!
#33: Yang Da Il- sorry
Yeah, back at it again with the painful emotions.
#32: Rothy- Burning
Now this might not be the most original of sounds, but I absolutely love Rothy’s voice. An impressive debut and I will definitely be keeping my eye out for more.
#31: SHINee- Our Page
Does this even need words?
#30: iKON- KILLING ME
It took me a long time to decide if I liked the beat drop in this song, but I am a sucker for deep voices so the opening forced me to listen to this song and made me really want to love it… and now I really like the beat drop too! Unpopular opinion alert: I prefer this song to Love Scenario *gasp*
#29: EXID- I Love You
Well this is my new favourite EXID song.
#28: EXO-CBX- Blooming Day
I mean… some of the lyrics are too cheesy for my liking, but have you heard those voices? I can forgive cheesiness if it’s sung as well as that.
#27: Red Velvet- Power Up
I actually really didn’t like this song to begin with… but it didn’t really have anything to do with the music. I hated Wendy’s pigtails and the girl scouts inspired outfits just really didn’t do it for me… they’re not children? They can be cute without dressing like 7 year olds… that might be a bit harsh, but still. Anyway, I saw their recent performance in which they’re dressed a bit more maturely, which allowed me to listen to the song all the way through without cringing and I fell in love. “Let’s power up!”
#26: The Rose- BABY
I actually saw this in concert in January before it was released when they toured in Europe and it was incredible…
#25: Mamamoo- Egotistic
Now I’m not typically the biggest latin music fan, but the girls really pulled it off (I mean, naturally, it’s Mamamoo).
#24: SHINee- Countless
Although this was SHINee’s last title track this year, it was actually the fist one I listened to all the way through and it made me go back and listen to the whole album, causing me to fall in love with previous tracks. I don’t know what it is, but I love this song.
#23: DREAMCATCHER- Full Moon
This was more of a single than a title track and it doesn’t have a music video, but it’s easily my favourite of the three title tracks/singles that the group released this year… all of which were pretty good. DREAMCATCHER are just a lovely breath of fresh air.
#22: GOT7- Miracle
Okay so usually I don’t include seasonal songs so high on my list (as you saw by Take Me Higher), but this is just so gorgeous and pretty that I couldn’t resist.
#21: SOYOU- All Night (ft. Sik-K)
Slighlty jazzy and a lot sultry is the way I like my music, so this was right up my alley.
#20: Huh Gak- Empty words
A beautiful song with a beautiful MV, as usual from Huh Gak. I also love that the video is LGBTQ+ as this is not something you see a lot in Korea.
#19: EXO- Love Shot
This is a great song (and those live performances with Kai in red killed me little)… I do struggle to listen to it unless I’m watching a performance or using it as background whilst doing something else because of the repetitiveness of the “nanana” bits, but otherwise I can’t get enough.
#18: OH MY GIRL- Remember Me
So remember how I said Secret Garden made me fall in love with OH MY GIRL? I love this song even more.
#17: KEY- One of Those Nights (ft. Crush)
Not only has SHINee’s music this year been great as a group, but both KEY and ONEW have released incredible solo albums.
#16: Girls’ Generation-Oh!GG- Lil’ Touch
Girls’ Generation are iconic in the K-Pop industry, but I must admit to not really liking an of their music… until this song. WOW.
#15: Red Velvet- Bad Boy
I mean I generally like Red Velvet’s velvet tracks a lot… soooo yeah.
#14: Huh Gak- The Last Night
This music video is so simple and powerful, and of course Huh Gak’s voice is beautiful.
#13: Mamamoo- Paint Me
One of the first songs of the year, but so so impressive. Mamamoo really do have incredible vocals and look at the aesthetics of the music video too!
#12: MINSEO- Is Who
I mentioned earlier that I love jazz pop, so this gypsy jazz inspired track + the uniqueness of Minseo as a performer hooked me.
#11: FTISLAND- Summer Night’s Dream
#10: Mamamoo- Starry Night
Beautiful, but definitely more summery than spring considering it’s the title track of their spring-themed album 😀 Their voices almost make you feel like you’re seeing the gorgeous New Zealand landscape yourself. Living vicariously for the win!
#9: GOT7- Lullaby
An amazing title track for an amazing album… fitting. Also, bonus points for Harry Potter references!
#8: Leebada- Night Dream
Can I copy and paste what I said before? HER VOICE IS BEAUTIFUL PLEASE SUPPORT.
#7: SEUNGRI- 1, 2, 3!
Retro and catchy… perfect.
#6: DAY6- Stop The Rain
Okay so technically this is Japanese… but it’s a Korean group so I’m including it because WOW THIS IS A GOOD SONG. Full of emotions and so, so powerful.
#5: Jimin Park- April Fools (0401)
So this song does have a MV, but it is age-restricted so I felt it would be better to include a live performance. JYP finally let Jimin release music and gsoh was it good. Her voice! Helps that I love this kind of music, of course.
#4: IU- BBIBBI
She’s Korea’s darling for a reason… (+ the aesthetics are so good… which has nothing to do with the music, but I just wanted to mention it anyway).
#3: WheeIn- EASY (ft. Sik-K)
Is their a recipe for perfection? WheeIn must have found it.
#2: Mamamoo- Wind Flower
Although not their most popular comeback of the year, I love the noir-inspired and laidback appeal of this song.
#1: Zion.T- Hello Tutorial ft. SEULGI
Although initially easy to overlook for its sweet simplicity, this song hooked me after I found myself unable to stop watching the MV and since then it has not let me go. I love it so much.
So those are my top 50 K-Pop title tracks of 2018! What do you think of my list? What does your list look like? And make sure to keep an eye out for a shorter part 2 in which I discuss the b-sides I loved. Happy listening and Merry Christmas if you celebrate, Keira x.
Hey guys! I’m almost on holiday, so some more interesting posts should be coming up shortly (or at least some longer ones) but whilst I’m still dead tired I thought I would share some of my favourite K-Dramas with you, because they’re great for procrastination and keeping you up way past the time you meant to go to bed. Enjoy!
CHIEF KIM/ GOOD MANAGER
If you like comedies with hilariously over-the-top characters, an office setting and next to no romance, this is the drama for you! It deals with “Chief Kim” who is hired by a company thinking he will pretend not to see the financial corruption, but who ends up inadvertently thwarting the company’s horrible schemes. Watch it here.
STRONG WOMAN DO BONG SOON
A cute romance accompanied by a fight against an unknown, deranged kidnapper, this is also a hilarious drama. If you like adorable female bodyguards with super strength, adorable romances, and a side of horrifically creepy bad guys you’ll love this drama! Watch it here.
Going into the more sci-fi/paranormal type of genre, if you like vampires that don’t sparkle or live in coffins, but are the product of science, antagonists who are just a nasty piece of work, and don’t mind getting your heart ripped to pieces, this is an amazing drama. Watch it here.
What are some of your favourite dramas or TV shows? Let me know! Happy watching, Keira x.
Hey guys! Kind of a lazy post today (I may have fallen asleep for an hour and a half when I was supposed to be writing today’s post), but I hope you like some of these videos as much as I did! I’ve got a good variety, from dance to comedy and even a TED talk…. and stay tuned for Benedict Cumberbatch fixing your biggest issue at Christmas: receiving bad gifts!
So what are some of your favourite videos? Share them with me 🙂 Happy watching, Keira x.
Hi everyone and welcome to day 10 of A Very Posty December! Today we’ve finished off the last of the GOT7 posts and I figured it was a good time to bring back some festive spirit with a wintry book tag! Enjoy.
#1: What book is so happy and sweet it warms your heart?
Okay… but is there really another answer?
#2: What’s your favourite book with a white cover?
This book (obviously) has a predominantly white cover. It was also one of the most heart-shattering and heart-warming books I have ever read and thrives in the paradox.
Reading this book is not simply absorbing a new world, but embarking on an emotional journey in which you can be tossed around my hurricanes, spat out hundreds of miles away by tornadoes and drowned by tsunamis the size of large skyscrapers.
If you were to only read five contemporary books in your entire life, this should definitely be one of them.
#3: You’re sitting in a nice, comfortable chair with a cup of tea. What monster book are you reading?
I don’t even know anything about Sarah J. Maas’ next book, but I know that I really want to read it… and given the length of her recent books it may well be a monster book!
To be fair, I might still be a bit in denial that the Throne of Glass series has ended… I’ve been reading that for a good 4 or 5 years and it’s all over….. 😦
I wonder what she has in store for us next…
#4: It’s snowing outside and you decide to have a snowball fight. What fictional character do you want to have this snowball fight with?
Hagrid is the personification of the gentle giant… in book character form. Having a snowball fight with him would be a blast and he would definitely know where all the best spots were!
#5: Sadly, your campfire is dying. What last few chapters of a book would you throw in the fire to revive it and keep yourself warm?
There are not words to describe how much I hate this book. Forget the last few chapters, the entire thing can be sacrificed for my warmth (or at least given away so I never have to look at it again, because I don’t support book burning).
#6: What book do you love so much that you would buy another copy of it to give someone as a gift to inspire them to start reading?
To be fair, this might not be the best book for someone who is starting to get into reading, as it is written in a very lyrical way, which can slow down the pace of the story a bit. That being said, it’s an absolute masterpiece and I love it, so I decided to include it anyways!
#7: Who do you tag?
Okay, so I’m going to tag Kat, Bianca, Vicky, Fadwa and The Orang-utan Librarian, but if you want to do this tag, feel free to do so and link back to me so that I can read your post! Equally if I’ve tagged you, don’t feel that you have to do the tag!
And that’s it! Did you enjoy? Let me know by leaving a comment… I love hearing from you guys. Happy reading, Keira x.
Hi guys! So I’m wrapping up GOT7 posts with a countdown of my all-time favourite GOT7 songs. Stay tuned until the end to see my number 1 favourite GOT7 song! I decided to let the songs speak for themselves in this one, so I’ve not written much.

Emotional. Impressive. Beautiful.
Uplifting. Hopeful. Soothing.
#8: If You Do
Classic. Catchy. Nostalgic.
Upbeat. Romantic. Danceable.
#6: You Are
Friendship. Strength. Teamwork.
#5: My Youth
Profound. Bittersweet. Soaring.
#4: Moon U
Sweet. Romantic. Mushy.

Painful. Raw. Personal.
#2: One And Only You
Fun. Flirty. Conversation.
Sensual. Romantic. Otherworldly.
Thanks for sticking with me! What are your favourite GOT7 songs? Happy listening, Keira x.
GOT7’s EP Eyes On You was released on the 12th of March 2018. It was the group’s first release of 2018 and helped cement their transition to a more mature sound. The song brought with it a collaboration with Hyolyn, a former member of the group SISTAR, and now a solo artist with her own label.
In this post I will be reviewing all 6 tracks.
One and Only You (ft. Hyolyn) is a funky R&B/Soul collaboration with former SISTAR member, Hyolyn. The collaboration works perfectly, with Hyolyn’s high tone and gorgeous vocals giving the song an extra dimension and complimenting the group so well. The song is upbeat, impressive, and has a good rhythm. 5/5.
Look is a dance track, which also incorporates some of the group’s more low-key singing and rapping from their R&B tracks in the verses. The chorus, however, is full out dance-like-nobody-is-watching synth heaven with some fun percussion twists. Fun, but not my favourite ever. That being said, tempo is played with masterfully and you won’t be bored. 4/5.
The Reasonis an upbeat, summery dance track. I especially like the soft rap verses. The chorus is quite fun, just not as interesting to listen to as the verses. Fun, but not special. 3.5/5.
Hesitate is what I like to call “chill pop”: somewhere between pop/dance, ballad and soft hip-hop. It’s soothing and relaxing, if not memorable. 3.5/5.
Us is a solid R&B based track, with some good raps and pretty vocals, a good beat and a good mix of different tempos, sounds and rhythms. It’s danceable, almost hypnotising and one of my favourite songs on the album! 4.5/5.
Thank You is a pretty standard upbeat ballad dedicated to the group’s fans. Nothing particularly special, but a decent song. 3/5.
Overall this album had a lot of good songs, with one or two great songs, which isn’t bad for a 6-song-short EP. Like many of GOT7’s recent albums, the track list is made up largely of dance and R&B, with the occasionally chill hip-hop or ballad peeking its way into the mix. I also just want to give a shoutout to the group’s incredible music videos lately. Look, for example, at the scene below from Look (funny I know)! Gorgeous!!!!!!!
My Music Taste
What do you think of the album? Watch out for my countdown of my favourite GOT7 tracks tomorrow and stay tuned for lots more posts this December! Happy listening, Keira x.
GOT7’S album You Are was released on the 10th of October 2017. More accurately, it is an EP and aptly contains 7 songs. The album centres around the idea of GOT7 being forever 7 and their great strength and friendship together.
In this post, I will be reviewing all 7 tracks.
Moon U is an incredibly relaxed and soft hip-hop song and is probably my favourite song on the whole album. It highlights the unique features of each of the members’ voices, especially in the case of JB and Youngjae. It’s soothing and trickles over you like a sweet, bubbling brook. 5/5.
Teenager is a relaxed dance song and, quite unusually for a K-Pop song, features a rap chorus. My favourite line is definitely “I can do anything if you tell me good boy”… iconic. Moving swiftly on, the song is generally fun and playful, as befitting the title, whilst retaining the general calmness of the entire album. 4/5.
You Are is an incredibly understated and subtle dance song (it is dance, but much more calming than anything you would typically associate with the genre). It has an airy, euphoric sound which never fails to make me feel happy. 4.5/5.
Firework is a smooth and calm electronica track. The occasional echoing and moments of silence in the music are particularly effective. It works beautifully bright celebrations into an otherwise sweet and soft song. 4/5
Remember You introduces a new genre to the album- R&B/Soul. It’s a very sweet, coffee-shop version of the genre, which again matches the overall feel of the album. That being said, this song has a bit of sensuality in it. 4/5.
To Me carries on with the R&B/Soul style of Remember You, but has a more youthful and upbeat twist, largely through the use of light staccato percussion. 4/5.
Face rounds the album off by returning to the soft, melodic hip-hop style of Moon U, but ends on a high note with a good build up to a catchy chorus. 3.5/5.
Overall, this was a transitional album from their Flight Log trilogy into their new, more mature style of music and it was perfect. It was not transitional in that the music was somewhere in between the two periods of their music, but in that it pioneered their growth as a group and as musicians, producers and artists. The tracks fit seamlessly together, whilst maintaining some of the variety which endears me so much to K-Pop; the music is calming yet exciting all at once, and the title track is not only catchy but also quality.
My Music Taste
What do you think of the album? Happy listening, Keira x.
Hello everyone and welcome to day 5 of a Very Posty December… less than three weeks until Christmas!!! I’m taking a break from GOT7 week today to bring you a bookish post about the books I want to read before the end of the year (obviously, you read the title).
Woman at Point Zero is the book I need to finish by tomorrow for school, so yes, I hope that I have finished this one by the end of the year 😀 It tells the story of a woman sentenced to die during the space of a night.
Perfume is a book I have been reading for quite some time and I hate having unfinished books when a new year starts, so hopefully I can finish this one when I finally have some time off of school! It’s about a boy with a wicked sense of smell.
Selected Poems is a selection of poems by T.S. Eliot, including The Wasteland, which I had to read for school. As such I have partially read this book, but I want to finish reading the other poems before the end of the year.
On a slightly lighter note, I’m in the middle of reading Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy, so I would like to finish that before the end of the year as well. I’m currently part way through the second book. The series follows a woman, Diana, who is a witch, but has been suppressing her powers, and her forbidden romance with the vampire Matthew.
So what books do you want to read before the end of the year? Happy reading, Keira x.
