It’s just a school, right? A fictional school, but still a school. So why did so many of us want to get that magic letter and be whisked away from the parents who baked us cakes, gave us clothes and tucked us in to bed to attend Hogwarts? (Not that all parents do those things, but mine certainly did.)
Originally this post was supposed to talk about some books set in schools that I love, but I actually don’t usually love books set in schools, and I certainly don’t love them because they are set in schools, so that post wouldn’t have been very fun to write or read. Hence, I decided to talk about this instead, which is why I am currently typing this whilst waiting for my new textbooks to arrive in the post so I can do my homework and whilst wearing gloves so that my bones don’t freeze and break because my room is freezing and the heating hasn’t kicked in yet.
Anyway, so today is really more of me asking a question than providing an answer. Why did you want that Hogwarts letter?
For me, I think it was a combination of reasons. My mum always joked that I was basically a Hermione, so that was probably a pretty major factor. And who wouldn’t want cool magic?! But really, if I think about it critically and a little bit cynically, I read and loved Harry Potter during a time where I wasn’t having the best time at school, and perhaps more importantly, wasn’t completely happy with who I was. I didn’t every really have a desire to be “like everyone else” and that wouldn’t explain why I wanted to go to Hogwarts into my early teen years, but I did always want to be unique, special, different, as if that would somehow make a more worthy and likeable person. There’s not much more special than going to Hogwarts now is there?!
So why did you want to go to Hogwarts?
Let me know if you want more sort of discussion-type posts like this or maybe more posts about my personal journey through mental health problems and how I’ve become much more understanding and knowledgeable about the type of person I am. I think I might like to do some posts like that, but only if someone was going to be interested in reading them!
Thank you for reading, Keira x.
